I loved everything about baby Eleni’s in-home newborn session. Her big sister greeted me at the door and was excited to show me all of the rooms in the house. Honestly, I love when kids do this because it helps them warm up to me AND it allows me to brainstorm some fun shot ideas as we go along.
So what are the best rooms to take pictures in for an in-home newborn session? Clients often wonder if their house will be clean or pretty enough, and I can assure you that ANY home will do!
Living Room
A great place to start taking pictures is the Living Room. Eleni’s parents tidied it up beautifully before I arrived but we still shifted a few large baby items around while I photographed everyone — and that is totally okay! The living room had beautiful natural light complimented by deeper rich tones in their furniture. It was a cozy place to start.
I noticed a cute little sun room off of the living room so we took several photos in there too!
Primary Bedroom
When babies are first born, many spend weeks or months sleeping in the primary bedroom with their parents, so it seems like a natural spot to take photos. Eleni’s big sister was excited to have the whole family pile onto the bed. Kids love it!
Nursery
If parents have a designated nursery for their newborn I LOVE taking photos in there! It’s always fun to see how each detail has been carefully planned and thought out. During pregnancy, Eleni’s mom often looked at her pregnancy tracker to see how her baby was growing, and once she reached the size of a peach the nickname stuck. Mom and Dad often referred to baby Eleni as “Peach” and her nursery was so cutely decorated to resemble her nickname!
Dining Room or Sun Room
When clients opt for my Sun Package which includes posed photos of their baby, I typically look for the largest natural light source and shoot there. Often that is wherever there is a sliding glass door, generally the dining room or sun room. For Eleni’s posed photos we went back to their beautiful sun room. The lighting was perfect, and you would never know that the pictures were taken in-home rather than a studio.
In-home newborn sessions are so fun! Each home and each family is unique. I love seeing how the homes reflect the family’s personality.
Are you hesitant to book a newborn session because you’re not sure about where to take the pictures? You can send me pictures of the rooms you have in mind and I’ll tell you what will work best! Just send me a message and we can chat about how to make your dream session come to life.
